Cycling nearly 1,000 kilometers through the UAE and Oman is no small feat. The journey from the Al Qudra cycle track in Dubai to Muscat and back covers 985 kilometers, testing endurance, navigation skills, and mental strength. Along the way, a detour to climb Jebel Hafeet adds a challenging mountain ascent to the ride. Spending over 40 hours on the bike without sleep pushes the limits of human stamina, and hallucinations on the return trip highlight just how intense this adventure can be.

Preparing for the Ride
Before setting off on a journey like this, preparation is key. The route covers a mix of urban roads, desert highways, and mountainous terrain. Riders need to plan for:
Route planning: Knowing the roads, rest stops, and border crossing requirements between the UAE and Oman helps avoid surprises (although we got surprised by the time it took to cross the border by bike, almost 2 hours)
Physical conditioning: Training for endurance and climbing prepares the body for long hours in the saddle and steep ascents like Jebel Hafeet.
The Al Qudra cycle track in Dubai offers a great starting point. Its smooth paths and scenic desert views provide a warm-up before hitting the open roads toward Oman.
The Route and Highlights
The journey begins in Dubai, heading southeast toward the Oman border, via Al Ain. The route passes through desert landscapes and small towns, offering a glimpse of the region’s natural beauty and cultural diversity.

Jebel Hafeet Detour
About halfway to Muscat, the detour to Jebel Hafeet stands out as a memorable challenge. This mountain near Al Ain rises to 1,240 meters and features a winding road with sharp curves and steep gradients.
The summit rewards riders with panoramic views of the surrounding desert and cityscape. It’s a perfect spot to rest and refuel before continuing the journey.

Crossing into Oman
After descending Jebel Hafeet, the route continues toward the Oman border. Crossing requires proper documentation and timing, as border controls can vary. Once in Oman, the road to Muscat offers a mix of coastal views and rugged terrain.
Muscat itself is a vibrant city with a rich history and stunning architecture. We did not take any breaks to enjoy what Muscat had to offer, as we needed to head back to Dubai as fast as possible.
The Return Journey and Challenges
The ride back to Dubai is just as demanding as the outbound trip. Fatigue accumulates, and the lack of sleep becomes a serious factor. Spending over 40 hours on the bike without rest leads to physical exhaustion and mental strain.
Hallucinations are a real risk during such extreme endurance rides. They can cause disorientation and increase the danger of accidents. Staying alert, taking short breaks, and managing pace are crucial for safety.

Tips for Long-Distance Cycling Adventures
For anyone considering a similar long-distance ride, here are some practical tips:
Plan your route carefully: Know where you can stop for food, water, and rest.
Bring a support car: Always have the car close by, especially during roads with more traffic.
Train consistently: Build endurance and strength over weeks or months.
Carry essential gear: Tools for bike repairs, first aid kit, and navigation devices.
Listen to your body: Take breaks when needed and avoid pushing through dangerous fatigue.
Stay hydrated and nourished: Regularly drink water and eat to maintain energy levels.
Prepare for weather changes: Desert heat during the day and cooler temperatures at night require adaptable clothing.
Final Thoughts
Cycling from Dubai to Muscat and back is a demanding adventure that tests physical and mental limits. The detour to climb Jebel Hafeet adds a rewarding challenge and spectacular views. Spending over 40 hours on the bike without sleep highlights the importance of preparation, pacing, and self-awareness.
This journey offers more than just distance covered. It reveals the landscapes and cultures of the UAE and Oman in a way few other experiences can. For cyclists seeking a tough but unforgettable ride, this route delivers both challenge and beauty.
